What inspires you? For me, it's searching for the unique finds at a flea market. It's taking a great photo, and thinking about the many ways that I can use it. It's about discovering that new craft, or a new technique for an old craft, that leads me down a different path. It's seeking that charming, out of the way place that the locals know and love. And while you're there, having a bite to eat and a good glass of wine to make it perfect!

Polka Dot Porch: It's all about having a place to think about what inspires me, share those simple ideas and hopefully, inspire you for your next memorable adventure!

Country Living Fair - 2008

Country Living Magazine has done it again! They set the stage for a perfect weekend of treasure hunting! Located in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Village, Country Living Magazine held there 3rd annual Country Living Fair this weekend. For only a $12 dollar per day, you could venture for hours seeking new and old finds or old finds that have been re-purposed.

From pins made froms flour sacks and zippers to vintage stationary - there was something for everyone! It is my recommendation that anyone that loves decorating, collecting and the hancrafted arts must visit next year!

Check out the slideshow to the right for some snapshots of the weekend!

Living Retro: Drive-In Movies!

Who would have thought that Drive-In movie theaters from the past are making a come back? Did you know that some of the most current up-to-date movies are currently playing? And it is dirt cheap (well, compared to the regular $10.00 for a soda and a popcorn theaters). It running only about $6.00 per adult and the concession stands are quite cheap (did I mention unhealthy yet oh so good?!?!). It is really fun -it is like a family-friendly tailgate party.

There are two drive-in theaters around Pittsburgh I have been to this summer: The Twin Hi-Way Drive-In and the Dependable Drive-In Theater. Just to point out a couple possible important issues, Twin Hi-Way only has one screen and some unknown name of slushy called FRUSHEEZ and Dependable has four screens and actual the actual ICEE drink. I love that ICEE drink, don't you? Oh, and Dependable is the home of the Dollar Dog for those out there that eat those (after watching "How it is Made" - hot dogs are not part of my menu choices any longer).

Here are some tips for taking an adventure to the Drive-In Movie theater near you!
  1. Get there early! If you have an SUV you will be requested to park towards the back of the drive-in; if you have a regular car you will get primo parking!
  2. Pack blankets and pillows; believe it or not it does get chilly even in the middle of summer!
  3. Take chairs and playing cards so you have something to do prior to the movie start.
  4. Bring the kid's PJ's so when you get home at 1:00am or later (yes, that late) you do not have to change them!
  5. And if you like wine, you can sneak it in as long as you put it in cups (yes, I know this is so tacky for some of you!)

Some theaters are open all year long! Have fun! Be Retro! It can even be romantic! Just think of Grease!
